Green Corn Festival - Philipsburg Manor. September 4-6, 10:00 am-6:00 pm. The Green Corn Festival explores the history and culture of the area`s Native American residents. Enjoy folk tales, song, and storytelling, and a participatory presentation of traditional Native American dance, plus open-hearth cooking demonstrations, games, live music, and hands-on craft activities for children. Susan McLellan Plaisted will demonstrate Native American cooking and medicine making. Arthur Kermss returns with demonstrations of wampum-making and treenware (wooden bowls and utensils). Pick Your Own Eggs. Saturday, September 4 and Sunday, September 5, 11:00 am-12:00 pm. $12/person. During this program you and your family will get an inside peek at egg production on a small farm while getting hands-on experience with our chickens. Join us to collect freshly laid eggs, then hand-wash and package them just like Stone Barns` farmers do. The fresh eggs you`ve collected will be yours to take home and enjoy! You will never look at farm work or store bought eggs in the same way. Each participant receives a half dozen eggs to take home. Insider’s Tour. Fridays and Saturdays, 11:00 am–12:30 pm. $15/adults, $9/youth (ages 12 to 14). Our most intensive tour is an intimate, behind-the-scenes view of Stone Barns led by one of our farm or program staff. Get up close and personal with the livestock and take a walk through the greenhouse and planting fields. Let us share with you our favorite places at Stone Barns. Due to the amount of walking and length of the tour, it is not recommended for those under 12 years of age. Hands On on the Farm: Gardening. Saturdays and Sundays, 1:00-2:00 pm. $7/children and youth ages 2 to 14. Pitch in with hands-on farm activities every Saturday and Sunday, and see how farm life changes with the seasons! We may lend a hand in the Greenhouse, harvest berries from the terrace garden, or help a farmer in the vegetable field. Programs are appropriate for children ages 2 to 14; adults may accompany children free of charge. Livestock Tour. Saturdays and Sundays, 12:00-1:00 pm. $10 adults/$7 children under 14. Join us for an in-depth look at Stone Barns Center`s pigs, sheep, chickens, turkeys, geese and honeybees! This specialized tour will focus on our animals: how they are raised on pasture; why each breed has been carefully selected for our small farm; and what makes all of our meat products — from fresh eggs to Thanksgiving turkeys — stand apart from the rest. Vegetable Tour. Saturdays and Sundays, 2:00-3:00 pm. $10/adults, $7/youth ages 12-14. Stop to smell the roses...and the compost, with a Stone Barns Center tour guide! This specialized tour will focus on the herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables in our fields, gardens and greenhouse. Learn how produce is grown sustainably on the farm, check out some of our favorite varieties, and find out which produce is the most flavorful and versatile for home gardeners and cooks. Catch of the Day Seining. Saturday, September 4, 11:00 am-1:00 pm and Sunday, September 5, 2:00-4:00 pm. Catch fish and other remarkable Hudson River creatures by wading into the river and dragging a 30’ net through the water. Led by Beczak educators, rain or shine.
